Shanghai, China -- SBM is celebrating the inauguration of an expansion to its crusher factory in Shanghai, China, and the tenth anniversary of its Mining and Construction Technology manufacturing activities in China. The value of the expansion investment implemented in 2008 was EUR 5 million and it comprised of a new workshop and warehouse, as well as an upgrade of the factory building and production equipment. SBM began manufacturing crushers in Shanghai in rented premises in 1999 and moved to the now-expanded, wholly-owned premises in 2002. Increasing the factory’s total floor space to more than 7,500 square meters, the expansion will double production capacity at the Tianjin plant. The manufacturing portfolio will be extended to include several new small crusher models and the factory will also start producing screens and feeders, allowing Metso’s other manufacturing units to focus on larger and tailor-made crusher models. The new plant layout made possible by the expansion is expected to increase also manufacturing efficiency. In addition to the Chinese and Asian markets, the Shanghai factory serves SBM’s mining and construction customers on a global basis. The expansion strengthens the facility’s position as one of the main manufacturing units in SBM’s Construction business line. The Shanghai factory currently employs approximately 200 people. SBM aims to respond to its customers’ needs by strengthening its presence, capabilities and supply capacity in the emerging markets.
