Newmont Mining Corp.'s Midas Mine in Elko County is back in production. Federal regulators allowed the underground gold mine to reopen last week after crews tunneled out a bypass around a ground failure that prompted its March 10 shutdown The incident blocked the main mine access. Active mining operations must have two escape routes, and the ground failure blocked the access where mining equipment and vehicles enter. More than 30 employees working underground at the time were brought to the surface using the mine's secondary escape hoist. There were no injuries. Newmont spokeswoman Mary Korpi says the operation will soon return to normal production levels.
